Abstract
Biometricbasedhumanidentificationsystemsareinhighdemandduetogrowingsecurityandprivacyconcerns.Thehumanearisoneoftheimportantphysiologicalbiometricusedextremelyforpersonalrecognitionnowadays.Ear detectionisacrucialstageinthecomputationalprocessofearrecognition.How- ever, there is a significant absence of ear detection techniques in the literature. Thiscreatesaproblemintermsofgrowingtheuseandapplicationsofearrecog- nition systems in commercial systems. Uncontrolled conditions such as pose change, occlusion, and change in illumination offers a significant barrier toclas- sic ear detection algorithms. This study provides an efficient method for auto- maticallydetectingearsfrom2DprofileimagesusingFasterR-CNN.Thesystem goes through two stages of training: First, pretrained CNN model ResNet50 is trainedtoclassifyearandnon-earsegments.Second,theunifiedRegionProposal Network(RPN)withResNet50,istrainedtodetectearfromprofilefaceimages.
