Abstract
It is well known that a teacher’s way of thinking and beliefs guide his or her behavior and decisions inside and outside the classroom. The challenge set for the classroom teacher is high. Besides having to master their various subjects, they must have a command over wide repertoire of different teaching methods and strategies (pedagogy) and understanding of the learning processes of students (Ahtee & Salonen, 1995, p. 162). Competence in one’s professional work role is important in the overall learning process. Ready (1967) described competence as a motivational factor that is responsible for individual achievement. Still, results of numerous studies reveal that teachers are experiencing difficulties in the performance of several professional activities. A qualified teacher has the methodological competence to enable students to develop skills for creativity and understanding. The term professional competency refers to a set of knowledge, skills values, attitudes, capacities and beliefs people need for success in a profession. Teachers’ professional competencies include various competencies in different areas such as pedagogical, cultural, communicational, personal, intellectual etc which are needed for effective teaching.
