Abstract
House is considered as one of the three basic needs of life besides food and cloth. Housing fulfills a fundamental aspect of men’s need given that access to safe and adequate shelter and basic service is essential to a person’s physical, psychological, social and economic well-being. Access to adequate, affordable and quality housing is an important social goal in many countries. Due to rapid urbanization in Kanyakumari, migration rate increased from rural to urban leading to increasing population growth in urban areas. As a result, there is shortage of houses specially for poor migrants, who in search of shelter are residing in slums and squatter settlements. So, the demand of houses affordable to economically weaker section and low-income population has increased. For that, Government of India also has declared the mission of ‘Home for All’ by 2022. In order to achieve this objective, Central Government has launched a comprehensive mission “Pradhan MantriAwasYojana – Housing for All (Urban)”. It is the current and greatest housingprograms in India. The mission seeks to address the housing requirement of urban poor including slum dwellers.This scheme is to provide houses. So, this paper is to study the Pradhan MantriAwaasYoianaGramin (PMAY-U) scheme. The present study aimed to assess the socio-economic condition of Pradhan MantriAwaasYojanabeneficiaries, their Opinion and also various problems faced by them. The study area is confined to Kanyakumari Districtonly, sample of 100 beneficiaries are randomly selected and percentages andt-testused for analyses this study.
