Abstract
India being the world’s second largest populated country with a total population of 135.26 crores is still under a
serious threat of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 as it is facing great difficulty in flattening the curve because
the cases are rapidly growing. There are many reasons for the increase in the number of people infected by the
virus, out of which one is the spread of misinformation in terms of fake news which is creating paranoia in the
minds of the people. As more people are technology driven in the 21st century, unfortunately, they believe in
everything forwarded by their family and friends without the actual verification of facts. This results in a
panicking situation during the crisis. The lockdown further has given ample time to people, to go through the
trends set on social media platforms. This pandemic has been termed an infodemic, further a stage of
misinfodemics that the world is going through. To tackle the spread of misinformation, fortunately, factcheckers are doing their best to bring into the eyes of the people, most of the false claims that people make these
days. The proliferation of social media has been damaging and is difficult to manage during the virus out break
in India, but the Government and fact-checking sites are playing a vital role to tackle it. The research paper
studies different cases from where the spread of fake news took place to how it has impacted people in India.
