Cultivating Scientific Literacy in Students with Problem-Based Learning Techniques
Abstract
This study explores the effectiveness of problem-based learning (PBL) as a pedagogical approach to improve scientific literacy among students. In an era where scientific knowledge is increasingly essential for informed decision-making and engagement with societal issues, enhancing students’ ability to understand, evaluate, and communicate scientific concepts has become a crucial educational goal. Problem-based learning engages students in real-world problems, fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and independent inquiry.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative assessments and qualitative feedback to evaluate the impact of PBL on students’ scientific literacy. Participants included students from various academic backgrounds who engaged in PBL activities centeredaround authentic scientific issues. Pre- and post-intervention assessments measured changes in scientific literacy, while surveys and focus groups provided insights into students' experiences and perceptions of the PBL process.
Results indicate a significant improvement in students' scientific literacy, evidenced by enhanced ability to analyze scientific information, apply concepts to real-world contexts, and engage in scientific discourse. Qualitative data revealed that students valued the collaborative nature of PBL, reporting increased motivation and ownership of their learning. Challenges related to group dynamics and time management were also noted, highlighting areas for improvement in future implementations.
This study underscores the potential of problem-based learning as an effective strategy for promoting scientific literacy in education. The findings suggest that integrating PBL into the curriculum not only enhances students’ understanding of scientific concepts but also prepares them to navigate complex scientific issues in their personal and professional lives. Recommendations for educators include the incorporation of PBL methodologies across disciplines and ongoing support for students to maximize the benefits of this approach.
