Dr Prasanta Chakraborty
Pages: 1300-1302
Abstract
‘Durgotsava’ (festival of Goddess DURGA) originates from the royal family of Bengal. It’s not only in Bengal, but in Assam also. However, Durga-culture spread in Assam from ancient times in various ways. 'Kalika-Purana', one of the Eighteenth ‘Purana’s (Sanskrit sacred writings of Hindu mythology), was composed in Greater Assam in the ninth-tenth centuries. Prominent Assamese scholar Dr.Satyendranath Sharma wrote: The masterpiece of Asmiya ‘Manisha’(intellect) is the Kalika-Purana. Durga Mantra is found in Chapter 59 of that Purana: "JatajutassamajuktamardhendukritShekaram..." This Durgastava of Assam is common not only in Assam but also in greater Bengal.[1]
