Abstract
In light of the increasing reports of child sexual abuse, particularly involving individuals close to the victim, the significance of age-appropriate, culturally sensitive sex education for primary school children has become critically important. This research focuses on the development and validation of a standardized tool — the Sex Knowledge Assessment Scale (SKAS) — designed to measure sex education awareness among elementary and middle school children in Chandigarh, India. The tool was developed through extensive literature review, expert input, and rigorous statistical analysis, including factor analysis, to ensure validity and reliability. The 20-item SKAS demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.92) and a high Content Validity Index (S-CVI/Ave = 0.94). Factor analysis yielded four conceptual components reflecting various aspects of sex education knowledge: body autonomy, privacy, communication, and media safety. This study highlights the pressing need for structured sex education programs in Indian primary schools and provides a reliable tool for educators and policymakers to assess and enhance curriculum effectiveness.
