Abstract
Dihi-Sergarh is now popularly known as Disergarh. During the colonial rule, excellent quality coal was discovered in a wide area from Dihi-Shergarh to Raniganj such as Sitarampur, Kulti, Asansol, Nigha etc. During the 18th-19th centuries, several mines were dug in these regions for the extraction of coal. Coal trade was very profitable for the colonial rulers. So they set up railway lines in that region to get more profit. The region naturally became economically important. As a result of this, many tribals, cobblers, Kora, etc. community workers from neighboring areas like Bankura, Purulia, West Burdwan, Jharkhand, Singhbhum etc. migrate there for livelihood. The area gradually developed into an industrial area. It is seen that many Bengali businessmen like Dwarkanath Tagore, Shivakrishna Dan, Nibaran Chandra Sarkar etc. invested their money in coal business. Many geologists such as Rupat Johns, Victor Jacquemont, Reverend Everest, Dr. Roe, etc. discovered several new coal-rich regions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the vast region from Dihi-Shergarh to Raniganj became known to the whole world as a special economic area.
