Abstract
In the last few decades, the environment has posed a great threat to human society as well as to Mother Earth. The
extensive misuse of natural resources has left us on the brink of a ditch. The rainforests are being cut down, fossil
fuels are declining rapidly, the seasonal cycle is in a state of disarray, ecological disasters are common around the
globe and our environment is at a margin. Under these circumstances, during the last decade of the preceding
century, a new theory of reading nature writing, called Ecocriticism, emerged. It is a worldwide emerging
movement that came into existence as a reaction to man's anthropocentric attitude of dominant nature. The present
paper seeks to explore the eco-critical perspectives envisaged in some of the world's selected literature as well as in
English-language Indian writing. This environmentally-oriented study of literature gives rise to ecological literacy
among readers who are becoming eco-conscious in the process, taking good care of Mother Nature. As
environmental concerns are one of the main concerns of the day, Ecocriticism has undergone rapid development in
its short period of time since its introduction. . It is an interpretive tool for analysing nature writing, which is
commonly associated with environmental criticism, animal studies, Green Cultural Studies, Ecosophy, Deep
Ecology, Ecofeminism, Ecospiritualism and the like.
