EMPOWERING RURAL INDIA: AN ECONOMIC STUDY OF SELF-HELP GROUPS OF TAMIL NADU

Abstract
The main aim of the study is to evaluate the performance of the self-help groups in Tamil Nadu and analyse the impact of micro-credit on socio-economic empowerment of women in the Tamil Nadu in general Thoothukudi District in particular. Keeping this in view, the data available from the Reports of Mahalir Thitam (Women’s Planning Organization), Local Panchayat Office and NGOs records were used. Primary data collected from 134 members representing 25 self-help groups in Thoothukudi district. The study measured relationship between income and expenditure pattern of individuals before and after joining self-help groups in study area. Various functional forms of linear regression model were used to estimate the cause and effect relationship between income and expenditure pattern of the respondents.
This study found that socio – economic status of the SHGs members had increased in the form of family recognition, literacy and educational status. Majority of the women’s belong to 35 to 45 age group, 98.5 per cent of the SHGs members were from other than the higher castes. Among the respondents, 48 per cent of the women’s are house wife they are depends on husband earnings. Data revealed that more than one third of the family’s decisions were being taken by their husband. However, all the respondents have saving accounts the major purpose of savings reported to food security, children’s education and medical expenses.
Data indicated regression of income and expenditure of the respondent has a positive coefficient (r2 = 0.878) it denotes that Rs.5300.61 is in need for the basic monthly family expenditure of each members. If total income went by a rupee, on average expenditure increased by 0.792 paise. This research work found that women self-help members Marginal Propensity Savings is Rs. 0.21 paise for each on rupee their earnings. The majority of SHGs are faced to problem of lack of co-ordination among the members and lack of finance to start business. About 79 per cent of women very satisfied with their groups. Data show that after joining SHGs women’s are feel positive changes have reported increased to family income, nutrition awareness, girl child education awareness and increase in voicing for observed respondents concern in society. Empowerment is not just for meeting their economic needs but also more holistic social development.
