Effect Of Reduced Usage Of Social Media On Concentration And Stress Levels Among Undergraduate Female Students Of Queen Marys College (Qmc)

Abstract
The main objective of the present study was to determine the effect of social media usageand time spent on social media on levels of concentration and stress among female college students intheirunder graduation. In order to achieve the above said objectivethe study, twenty (n=20) femaleundergraduate students were randomly selected from QMC women's hostel, Chennai, Tamil Nādu, India. The age of students selected was ranged from 17 to 21 years. The participants thus selected were divided into two groups randomly as Group I who were asked reduce the time to less than 1 hour a day(non-continuously) on social media sites(n=10) and Group 'II' who werenot subjected to any restrictions on their routine usage of social media, were studied as control group (n=10). Group I used social media for less one hour a day, for five days for six-week period. A standardized survey questionnaire for inattention and stress were distributed among group I and group II participants as pre-test, before subjecting group-I to experiment and as post-test after conducting the experiment. The scores of pre-tests and post-test obtained in such a way were carefully collected and statistically examined by the dependent-t' test and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) for each and every selected dependent variable separately. It was concluded that reduced time spans in social mediausage group (group I) had shown significantly improved results regarding psychological variables like concentration andstress levels. However, the control group had not shown any significant improvement on any of the selected variables.
