Abstract
Background: Forward Head Posture is characterized by an anterior position of head in relation to the line of
gravity1
. Research also suggests that spending more than 20 h/wk on unsupported devices increases the risk for
developing cervical spine musculoskeletal disorders2
. Neck pain resulting from a reduction not only in the length of
muscle fibers, but also in the capacity to generate tension in muscles is also attributed to FHP11-13. FHP is associated
with weakness in the deep cervical short flexor muscles and mid-thoracic scapular retractors and shortening of the
opposing cervical extensors1
. Forward head posture impairs the mobility and function of the diaphragm and causes
inefficient contraction of abdominal muscles, decreasing lung capacity15. The purpose of this study was to determine
if a 6-weeks, targeted and progressive exercise program could improve FHP in symptomatic adults.
Objectives: To determine the efficacy of the structured exercise program and to reduce the treatment time required
to correct forward head posture.
Materials and methodology:88subjects with a history of neck pain participated in this study. A structured exercise
program for 6 weeks was given to the subjects. Pre and Post assessment of pain, MMT and forward head posture
was done. Exercise program included strengthening, stretching and breathing exercises.
Result: There was a significant difference between pain intensity and MMT. But there was no significant change in
the FHP.
