ISSUES AND CHALLENGES OF MUNICIPALITIES IN KARNATAKA: AN OVERVIEW

Abstract
Indian economy is a fastest growing economy. In olden days the Indian economy was explained as under
developed, agrarian, industrially backward, etc. India is second largest country in case of population and it has been
facing the problems related to population growth. A structural transformation has taken place and Indian
industrialization process has got momentum and the speed of industrialization has been increased. As per 2011
census of India, Karnataka has about 39.6 percent of total population living in urban areas. In Karnataka at present
there are 116 Town Municipal, Councils 10 City Corporations, 97 Town Panchayats 59 City Municipal Councils are
functioning. The Municipalities are facing variety of problems and such are hindering the smooth and efficient
functioning of the Municipalities. The paper has prepared with 5 objectives and contains Methodology, Historical
Background of Municipal Government in Karnataka, Meaning and Concept, Administrative Structure of
Municipalities, Major Functions of Municipalities, Revenue Sources of the Municipal Corporations, Expenditure of
the Municipal Corporation, Problems Faced by the Municipalities, Conclusion and suggestions. Secondary data is
used for the study.
