Abstract
AIM: To study the prevalence of distoangular impactions among patients in a Chennai based dental college.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in a private university setting. The data was
collected retrospectively from the digital archives information system and data was confirmed using
photographic checking. 1901 subjects fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion were included in the study.
RESULTS: It was observed that distoangular impactions were the third most prevalent type of impactions of
third molar teeth. The distoangular impactions were found to be significantly higher in terms of incidence
among female subjects (12.62%) compared to male subjects (10.21%).
CONCLUSION: Third molar impactions are fairly common among patients. Impacted teeth are a reason for
pain and infection in the posterior aspect of the mouth. The most common approach for an impacted third molar
is its surgical extraction. This study reflects on the patterns and trends of the various types of impactions of third
molars among patients based on gender and age.
