Abstract
The majority of the literature produced during the Victorian Era was preoccupied with issues of social stratification and political reform. During this time period, the interpretation of society was given more weight than individual interpretation. Writers such as John Stuart Mill, Charles Dickens, and Oscar Wilde came to prominence during this time period
This battle opened people's eyes to the reality of what was going on in their nation and in their government, and this awareness eventually found its way into works of literature and the arts. Literature shifted its focus from debating social class and poverty to providing a vivid account of conflict zones and calling into question the moral judgement of its audience. The Victorian era was immediately followed by the Modernist era. People believe that the Modernist movement began in 1901 and continued on until the 1960s or 1970s. I believe that the first signs of modernism appeared in art and literature around the year 1901, although the term "modernism" did not become widely used until the First World War and everything that followed it.
