Abstract
The purpose of this study is to measure the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives on the social and economic development of communities, using THDCIL (Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited) as a case study. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including surveys, interviews, and secondary data analysis. Data was collected from 400 local residents in the affected area of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India, including beneficiaries and those affected by the Tehri dam project, as well as individuals involved in project development. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the data, revealing a significant positive impact of THDCIL India Limited's CSR initiatives on social and economic development in the region. The study found that CSR initiatives in areas such as employment, economic infrastructure, resilience, health, environmental impact, and education and awareness have had a significant impact on the development of communities in the region. The study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence of the positive impact of CSR on community development, particularly in a developing country context. The findings have important implications for corporate managers and policymakers in designing effective CSR programs that contribute to sustainable development. The study also highlights the importance of engaging local communities in CSR initiatives and emphasizes the need for further research in this area. The future scope of this study includes replicating the research in other regions of India or other developing countries to validate the findings, as well as investigating the effectiveness of different types of CSR initiatives on community development. The study also suggests that future research should focus on the long-term impact of CSR initiatives on community development and explore the role of stakeholders in driving sustainable development.
