Abstract
Introduction: Childhood obesity is a global health concern associated with short-term and long-term health complications. Urbanization and lifestyle changes contribute to its rise, with urban areas fostering obesogenic environments. Conversely, rural areas experience shifts in dietary and activity patterns. Few studies comprehensively compare urban and rural childhood obesity disparities, essential for tailored interventions. Aim and Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine childhood obesity prevalence and associated risk factors in urban and rural settings. Objectives included assessing prevalence, identifying risk factors, and comparing urban-rural differences. Materials and Methods: A sample of 1000 children aged 5-12 from urban and rural areas underwent anthropometric measurements and questionnaire assessments. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression. Results: Urban areas exhibited higher childhood obesity prevalence (15% vs. 8%) and greater male predominance. Common risk factors included sugary beverage consumption (urban: 70%, rural: 60%) and limited physical activity (urban: 65%, rural: 60%). Logistic regression identified high sugary beverage consumption, limited physical activity, and low socioeconomic status as significant risk factors. Conclusion: Childhood obesity prevalence and risk factors vary between urban and rural settings, emphasizing the importance of tailored interventions. Addressing modifiable risk factors can mitigate childhood obesity burden and improve health outcomes across diverse populations. Further research is needed to explore additional contributing factors and intervention effectiveness.
