Abstract
Introduction : Respiratory disorders are one of the main causes of death in human beings. Respiratory disorder may
be caused by infections, by smoking, or by breathing in secondhand tobacco or other forms of air pollution. It
includes asthma, emphysema, tuberculosis and so on. If left untreated, it leads to death.
Aim : This study focuses on how dental practitioners treat populations with respiratory disorders having dental
problems.
Method : The present study was a descriptive cross sectional study done on how dental practitioners treat respiratory
disorder patients having dental problems. Approval was obtained from the institutional review board to conduct an
online survey. The survey was conducted among 100 dental practitioners. Questionnaires were prepared and
distributed among the dentist through online based surveys i,e., google forms.
Results : Among the total population, all 100% said that both the previous care history and general enquiry is used to
analyse respiratory disorder patients. 60% of the population believe that respiratory disorder and oral health are
linked together, 23% of the population do not believe that respiratory disorder and oral health are linked together
and 17% of the population said that respiratory disorder and oral health might be linked together. 70% of the population said that tooth infection spread to the lung, 1% of the population said that tooth infection does not spread
to the lung and 29% of the population said that tooth infection might be spread to the lung. 20% of the population
said that wearing a normal face mask will protect them from pulmonary tuberculosis affected patients, 70% of the
population said that wearing N95 highly will protect them from pulmonary tuberculosis affected patients and 10% of
the population said that none of these will protect them from pulmonary tuberculosis affected patients.
Conclusion : The present study thus concluded that the dental surgeons who are in practice and who are going to
practice in future must be prepared to provide necessary care for patients with complex medical conditions and even
the dental surgeons should take necessary precautions before treating the patients.
