Role of Academic Autonomy in Achieving Optimal Learning Environment: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract
Higher education is at the center of India's ambition towards building a more robust education system and
knowledge society to become a sustainable and leading world economy. To achieve this, the draft of the National
Education Policy, India (2019) lays onus on the transformation of the education system in response to requirements
of fast-changing, knowledge-based societies and strongly recommends "Autonomy" as a key player; the study,
therefore, aims to critically review the existing examination sampling Higher Education Institutes across the globe to
understand from their views, commentary and experiences of academic autonomy and its role in achieving optimal
learning environment. This systemic literature review constitutes a comprehensive search for studies and articles in
the Scopus database with case studies, empirical and theoretical models focusing on autonomy in higher education
institutes. A thorough analysis of relevant papers is done to build a typology and provide macro and micro factors in
assessing the role of academic autonomy in achieving the optimal learning environment in higher educational
institutes. The study aims to aid education policy research. For researchers, policymakers, educators, and Higher
Educational Institutes (H.E.I.s.), the Distribution of the articles based on the study as mentioned earlier and the
sources which published the research is presented in tabular form.
