Abstract
Economic development is a process of sustained increase in real national income along with structural changes in the economy over a long period of time. In contrast, sustainable development is a larger issue than economic development. As defined by the Brundtland Commission (1987), “Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Environmental protection and sustainable development are the two major concerns of the world community today. The irreversible environmental degradation caused in the process of attaining higher economic growth and development has compelled the society to believe that economic development and environmental protection are quite conflicting. In view of growing importance of sustainability there is the need to maintain a careful balance between economic development and environmental preservation. The main victims of environmental degradation are the under privileged section of the society of whom the majority is women especially tribal women. In traditional tribal economies the role of women was substantial and crucial. They played an important role in decision making. However, the changes in tribal economy have been visible with industrialization and economic development. Subsequently, the deterioration of the status of tribal women are taking place. In this context the study of the current status of tribal woman is very crucial as tribal women primarily depends on environment for their livelihood. This study has made an attempt to analyse the status of tribal women in Assam in view of growing concerns for sustainability and the factors responsible for changes in the status of them. The database for the study is both primary and secondary sources. The Bodos and Mishings constitute major tribal groups in Assam. This study was conducted among tribal women of these two communities residing in Golaghat district of Assam. The present study may help in policy formulation of the government to improve the status of tribal women as well as maintaining sustainability.
