Abstract
Cholinesterase isa family of enzymes thatcatalyze
thehydrolysisoftheneurotransmitteracetylcholineintocholineandaceticacid.Thereare2types;Acetylcholinesterase
also known as erythrocyte cholinesterase found in RBCs cell membrane andpseudocholinesteraseknownasplasmacholinesterasewhichissynthesizedmainlyinhepatocyte and is released into blood
and its activity is reduced in liver dysfunction due toreduced synthesis.Cholinesterase represents a group of
enzymes that hydrolyze
acetylcholineandothercholineesters.Therearetwomaintypesofcholinesterasewithdifferentbiochemical properties:
true or specific cholinesterase or acetylcholinesterase found in
allexcitabletissues(centralandperipheralnervoussystemandmuscles)andinerythrocytes.Itisahighturnoverenzymewithhighaffinityforacetylcholine,inhibitedathighconcentrationsofacetylcholine,andwith
lowaffinity fornonchlorineesters
