Abstract
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) defines social security as the protection society provides to its members through public measures to prevent social and economic distress caused by sickness, maternity, employment injury, unemployment, invalidity, old age, and death. The availability of health care and financial aid to families with children. The 1948 United Nations Declaration of Human Rights recognized social security as a fundamental human right, while the Indian Constitution's Article 21 asserts human dignity as a fundamental right. It includes health security in addition to the security of meeting one's fundamental need for clothing, food, and shelter. Income security is typically given priority in social security programmes because, in general, it may be used to meet the basic needs of the most vulnerable groups of people if they have a sufficient income.India's people will get healthier and live longer as the country goes through prolonged phases of expansion. According to UN Population Fund estimates, by 2030, 12% of India's population would be over 60. By 2050, that number is predicted to rise to 19.4%. According to projections, there will be more women than males in the 60+ age range. The population above 80 years of age has increased due to longer lifespans; this represents almost 1.1 crore people. By 2050, India is predicted to have the largest population of centenarians worldwide, with about 6 lakh individuals over 100.
The union and state governments implemented policies and programs for senior citizens, with some States lag behind due to operational and financial issues. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment offers pensions, travel incentives, income tax relief, medical benefits, extra interest on savings, security, and financial support for homes, day care centers, medical vans, and help lines., etc. The present study assesses the social security measures of elderly in India.
