Abstract
In 1986, during the Uruguay round of trade agreements in Punta del Este, agriculture was included in the discussions for the first time. The nondiscrimination principle underpins the WTO's operations, requiring parity in treatment of all trade partners and between domestically produced and imported commodities. This analysis is a macro-level look at data from 1985-86 to 2004-05 regarding agricultural exports and imports, as well as the area, production, and productivity of principal crops, farm harvest prices of principal crops, and the value and volume of agricultural exports and imports of principal commodities. Our research titled "impact of WTO on Indian agricultural trade" sought to examine the effects of the agreement on agriculture (AOA), the world trade organization (WTO), and the growth and composition of India’s agricultural exports and imports.
