THE PORTRAYAL OF WAR IN ART
Ashish Baran Mishra
Pages: 4183-4187
Abstract
Let's take a brief tour of a few military museums once we've considered their social and moral role. We need only look around to see that there were already museums dedicated to war even before the period of total war, but that it was the wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45 that really helped to disseminate them over the globe. The First World War was experienced differently by men and women in Britain. The First World War's female visual artists are mostly a mystery. Curator of the 2011 Imperial War Museum show, Women War Artists, Kathleen Palmer called attention to these misconceptions when she said, "it is often misunderstood what the role of the war artist is [...]." Many mistakenly believe it to be combat drawing.
