Abstract
Metaphors as a cognitive aspect are progressively gaining significance in all levels of linguistics. In
linguistics, the metaphor refers to the idea of meaning transfer; however, it still seems quite difficult to indicate the
scope and functional scope of this concept. Our research is aimed at the analysis of theoretical approaches used in
studying metaphor as a cognitive aspect. In linguistics, there are several approaches to the interpretation of
metaphor, for example, the metaphor which is considered as a deviation that has stylistic prerequisites (rhetorical
theory of metaphor). This position is partly related to the position that the meaning of a word largely comes down to
the conditions that the signifier must satisfy in order to apply a certain word to it. The characteristic feature of this
approach is that, it carries the direct meaning - the “arbiter of meaning” in conjunction with certain conditions and
conventions of the language that ultimately determines the formation of metaphors. For the purpose of our study
there were used such traditional linguistic research methods, as method of observation and description in order to
analyze necessary language materials and classify cognitive aspects.
