Abstract
Research dedicated to the didactics of the Arabic language in Algerian schools focuses mainly on recent and updated curricula, through pedagogical documents and the content of current textbooks. Most of these studies tend to marginalize the historical stages that the Algerian school system has gone through since independence. They assume that we can aim to improve Arabic language learning in our country without understanding how its curricula have evolved. However, understanding these developments would help us avoid previous shortcomings and build upon past achievements, to establish a rigorous and systematic educational theory. This work focuses on a crucial period that preceded the birth of the Algerian school system and contributed to its launch. This period dates back to the post-independence era, which had its factors and challenges, ranging from importing textbooks in general—and Arabic language books in particular—to local efforts. This stage was marked by both successes and failures that played a significant role in paving the way for the creation of an independent and strong Algerian school system.
