Abstract
The research focuses on activating the concepts of faces and parallels in weighing different jurisprudential opinions and critiquing them. The researchers relied on the book "Rules of the Qur'an" by Bakar ibn al-Ala al-Qushayri as the study's field, examining specific examples of faces and parallels and their impact on his jurisprudential preferences. This includes critiquing these opinions to discern their correctness through these examples. The importance of the research lies in its examination of this original source for the Malikis in interpreting the verses of rulings and the significant divergences, which contain valuable insights and methodological, scientific, and epistemological dimensions regarding faces and parallels. This area requires practical, applied study to reveal its substance. The research problem is centred on the application of faces and parallels to the rulings of the Qur'an according to al-Qushayri, with a focus on their presentation and jurisprudential implications. The study aims to highlight the importance of understanding faces and parallels in interpreting verses of rulings and the soundness of al-Qushayri's methodology in clarifying the related jurisprudential issues. It shows some aspects of Ibn al-Ala's mastery of the 'Rules of the Qur'an' regarding faces and parallels in terms of presentation, direction, argumentation and reinforcement. Notably, most of those who have studied faces and parallels have emphasised their impact on interpretation, while the jurisprudential impact has not been clearly demonstrated within the scope of our research. We therefore hope that our study will make a scholarly contribution. We adopted an inductive approach by thoroughly examining the entire book and identifying what he explicitly stated as faces for these words or referred to without explicit mention, merely noting their meanings. We then analysed and discussed examples related to jurisprudential decisions and his method of weighing different opinions and critiquing the less preferred ones. One of the most important findings is that for al-Qushayri, faces represent the multiplicity of meanings for a single term in the Qur'an. If one of these faces has more than one verse, they are considered parallels. It was observed that he was economical in his explanation of faces and parallels, with few jurisprudential issues related to them in his book. His style of presentation varied, and his Maliki school of thought particularly influenced his inclusion and weighing of faces and parallels. Most of the words for which he provided faces, which significantly influenced his jurisprudential preferences, were, in his view, instances of homophony. Therefore, the researchers recommend an emphasis on applied studies of faces and parallels in books with a methodological character that focus on the sources of legislation in the Qur'an and the prophetic tradition.
