Abstract
This research addresses the concept of promise in the Qur’anic discourse from a pragmatic perspective, focusing on the illocutionary force of speech acts as theorized by John Austin and John Searle. A promise is considered one of the key speech acts that goes beyond merely conveying information; it creates a real social effect, as it represents a verbal commitment toward a future action.
The study aims to analyze the manifestations of promise in Surah Al-Kahf, by exploring the pragmatic dimensions that contribute to achieving the illocutionary force of this act, such as context, speaker’s intention, and the relationship between speaker and hearer. It also sheds light on the conditions required for an utterance to be considered a valid promise, including sincerity, ability, and intention, as well as the importance of the hearer’s interpretation within the communicative situation.
This research offers a practical model for pragmatic analysis of Qur’anic discourse, emphasizing the interactive and functional nature of the text.
