Abstract
Water is necessary for the survival of the living organisms, and it is considered one of the most important natural elements of the environment, it covers more than two-thirds of the globe, but the fresh water represents less than one percent of the water supply in the world, which makes it one of the most valuable natural resources and its sustainable management is necessary to protect the environment and meet the current and the future demand. To protect this natural wealth from the dangers of pollutants and waste, the Algerian legislator relied on a set of foundations that contributed in setting down the necessary protection principles for water resources such as Islamic law, customs, international efforts and national legislation.
