Abstract
The problem of the study is focused on the obsolescence of the automated system used by the central library of
MustansiriyahUniversity and its inadequacy for the continuous inflation in the data that is dealt with daily. The
centrality of MustansiriyahUniversity in the use of the KOHA system and the obstacles it faced during the process
of achieving the transition to the KOHA system, which is the most suitable for its needs as it is an open source
system, the case study approach was used and relied on direct observation and examination as a basic tool for
collecting information. The most prominent results of the study are that the KOHA system is characterized by wide
flexibility and its ability to import data from other databases, which makes it contribute to not wasting time and
effort in converting the data available in the previous system and exporting it to KOHA with easy programming
steps, it also includes wide capabilities to achieve all the requirements of the library, as it can be used internally to
complete the work of the technical library departments and its services, or it can invest its capabilities to provide the
database available through a website through the OPAC interface in a way that suits the requirements of
development compatible with the orientation of researchers to websites to meet their needs of resources because of
the pandemic. The most prominent recommendations are the importance of using it by small and medium libraries
that do not have qualified staff and cannotindex their collections, as it contributes to strengthening partnerships
between libraries, as it supports the Z39 protocol, which allows the import of records from the Library of Congress
in addition to the export and exchange of records between two or more libraries according to the agreement Between
them ifthey both deal with systems that support the MARC format,so that the same templates are imported between
one library to another (note that when the program is installed, it is possible to import from four well-known
libraries).
