Abstract
This study examines women’s involvement in irregular (illegal) migration by analysing the push and pull factors that drive them to undertake such journeys. Using qualitative content analysis, the research investigates all female cases featured in the Echorrouk Investigates documentary episode “Soft Boats: Women in the Harraga Experience.” The aim is to identify structural and individual drivers of women’s irregular migration. The findings reveal that: 1. Marginalised social status is the lack of a recognised societal position or social capital. Serves as a significant push factor. 2. Economic vulnerability, manifested in chronic poverty and persistent unemployment, is the primary driving force behind women’s attempts at irregular migration. 3. Erosion of social ties, including fragile family relationships, widowhood, and divorce, further increases women’s vulnerability and intensifies their desire to leave. 4. Visual media can act as both a deterrent and an awareness-raising tool by highlighting the risks associated with irregular migration.
